About the Author

Hal Markowitz is Faculty Specialist in Environmental Enrichment and Animal Well Being at the University of California San Francisco and Professor Emeritus of Biology at San Francisco State University. He has mentored 46 graduate students and authored or co-authored more than 300 works spanning areas from relationships between brain chemistry/anatomy and behavior to genetics and behavioral ecology. His funded field research projects have primarily focused on marine mammals and primates.

Dr. Markowitz has been an internationally popular lecturer and consultant on environmental enrichment for four decades. Hal's 1982 book Behavioral Enrichment in the Zoo is seen by many as instrumental in spurring the modern movement in environmental enrichment for captive animals. He and his coworkers have published a number of works on relationships between animal husbandry procedures and biomedical research outcomes.
